EXHIBITIONS
The Art in Open Court: Making Connections
March 1 – March 30
FREE
The Art in Open Court is an art curriculum and teacher professional
development program designed by MOCHA for elementary school teachers.
The program guides teachers through art projects that build on and
reinforce lessons in the Open Court reading curriculum used in the
Oakland schools. This exhibit documents the deeply thought-provoking
work of children and teachers participating in the program in
celebration of Art IS Education month, observed throughout Alameda
County.
Reception: March 12, 5:30-7:30
PUPPET ART at MOCHA
Saturday March 15 | 1-4pm
FREE
Come to MOCHA for the debut of Carlitos and the Magic Garden. This
bilingual puppet theater production created by Tania Padilla and
ArtsChange is a 20-minute imaginative tale of a junk food-craving
marionette boy who discovers the benefits of garden, friends and his
grandma's chicken soup. This show (for children ages 3-7) has a
clear social message: eat home-cooked meals and fruits and vegetables
instead of fast foods, soda and sweets; children, like plants, need a
healthy peaceful environment to grow.
After the show, stay and create your own simple puppets and have fun
making foody art.
FAMILY EXTRAVAGANZA
Wacky Wicker: Building with Baskets
March 8 | 1–4pm | $7/child
Construct a creature out of wicker and baskets. Add flexible woven
reeds and raffia to build a silly sculpture, a marvelous mask or a
monstrous moose.

KIDS PAINT THE TOWN
MOCHA is partnering up to help Kids Paint the Town. Join this
community art exhibit that showcases youth art in Oakland and
Berkeley neighborhood shopping districts. Local merchant windows
will become art galleries for the street crowd for the month of April.
To participate: youth (grades K–12) should submit a 2-dimensional
piece of art (no larger then 11X14) using paint, collage, poetry,
photographs etc. with the theme: Spring Into Life. Create something
springy, fun and full of life.
Art must be delivered to MOCHA by March 22.
Artwork will then be sent to local merchants for display. Art will
remain on display for the month of April and then be returned to
MOCHA for pick up.
For more information on how to participate visit
www.kidspaintthetown.com or call 465-8770 x 310.
