EXHIBITIONS
The Art in Open Court: Making Connections
February 27 April 15
The Art in Open Court was created by MOCHA to
help Kindergarten classroom teachers connect
visual literacy to the Open Court reading program
used in the Oakland public schools. This exhibit
documents the children, their artwork and the
teachers journeys to make those connections, in
celebration of Art IS Education month, observed throughout Alameda County.
Childrens Art, Childcare and the Home Front, 1943-1966
April 17- June 3
Reception
April 21 | 1-4pm
2pm: Tour the exhibit with guest curator Joseph
Fischer (former lecturer and research associate in education at UC Berkeley)
During World War II, with many fathers away
fighting and mothers working in the shipyards,
the young children of Richmond were cared for in
childcare centers funded by the Kaiser shipyards
and the U.S. Maritime Commission. These 14
centers were trailblazers in an era well before
childcare outside the home became the norm. This
historic exhibit, on loan from the Richmond
Museum of History, documents an important period
in American history through artwork created by
the children who attended these centers.
SATURDAY STORIES

april 7 | 1-4 p.m.| free
The first Saturday of every month, MOCHA links
literacy with art, featuring children's stories
read out loud followed by artmaking based on the
themes of these captivating tales. On April 7,
guest artist Luzmarina Tovar reads stories about
frogs and reptiles in both English and Spanish.
Afterward we will make our own hoppity critters.
Saturday Stories are sponsored by Target.
