SPECIAL PROGRAMS


RE-Create is a recycled art competition and exhibition that is open to K-12 student artists in Oakland schools.

Student artists are invited to create artwork using discarded or reused materials and to compete for prizes.

Traveling Exhibit
Following this year's exhibition, selected pieces will become part of an exhibit that will travel to City Hall and various Public Libraries in Oakland.

Entrants whose pieces are selected for the traveling exhibit will be notified by phone by Sunday, December 10.

ELIGIBILITY


  • Open to students (K-12) attending Oakland schools.
  • Work must be original and not previously exhibited.
  • One entry per artist, or collaborative group.
  • Only ten individual entries per class. Collaborative projects are encouraged.
  • Jurors, employees of MOCHA and their immediate families are not eligible to enter.
  • There are no entry fees.

RULES OF ENTRY


Entries must be accompanied by a completed entry form.
You can download an entry form , or call MOCHA at 510.465.8770 to have an entry form mailed to you.
  • Art must be fabricated from 100% found or reused materials (excluding glue, paint, etc.)
  • All work must be display-ready. All constructions should be strong and secure.
  • 3-D work is encouraged.
  • All 2-D work must be wired for hanging and framed, if appropriate.
  • Work may not exceed 75 pounds.
  • Artwork must have a completed Entry Form (including title and artist statement) securely attached to the back or bottom of the artwork.

CATEGORIES


Art will be judged in one of five categories:
  • High School (Grades 9-12)
  • Middle School (Grades 6-8)
  • Upper Elementary School (Grades 4-5)
  • K/Early Primary (K-3)
  • Student Collaboration (groups/classes of students)

PRIZES


Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in each of the categories:
  • 1st prize $250
  • 2nd prize $100
  • 3rd prize $50
Honorable Mentions will be awarded for further outstanding work. Each artist will receive an excellence in art award.

CRITERIA FOR JUDGING


  • Artistic creativity and originality (50%)
  • Skillful and 100% use of reused materials (50%)

TEACHERS


    Oakland teachers, get your students involved in learning about waste reduction, reuse and recycling while being creative. Pick up your RE-create Teachers Packet with curriculum and hands-on project ideas to get your classroom participating in the Re-create Art Contest.

SUBMISSION OF ENTRIES


Entries must be delivered to: 472 Water St. in Jack London Square in Oakland on Friday, Saturday or Sunday November 9-11, 2 to 5pm

NOTIFICATION


All entries will be exhibited. Awards will be announced at the artist reception on Thursday, November 15, 2007

EXHIBITORS' INFORMATION


The Re-Create exhibit will be held in Oakland Jack London Square - 472 Water Street, Oakland.
Open for viewing November 15 through December 16, 2007.
Gallery hours: Wednesday-Friday, 3-5pm
Saturday-Sunday, 10am-2pm

A public reception will be held to celebrate the artists, their work and America Recycles Day on Thursday, November 15, 2007, 5:30-7:30pm.

Exhibited art will remain on display throughout the duration of the exhibit, and must be picked up after the closing of the show at 472 Water Street, Oakland.

Unclaimed artwork will be disassembled and recycled if not picked up by 5pm on Saturday, December 16.

Some selected pieces will remain with MOCHA for the Traveling Exhibit (see below).

TRAVELING EXHIBIT


Following this year's exhibition, selected pieces will become part of an exhibit that will display in the City Hall Rotunda in Oakland between January 9-31, 2008.
Entrants whose pieces are selected for the traveling exhibit will be notified by phone by Sunday, December 10.

Insurance: Due care will be taken to insure safety of artwork during handling and exhibition. MOCHA and the City of Oakland assume no responsibility for loss or damage that may occur.

Copyright: Photographic reproduction of entries may be used or copied by MOCHA and/or City of Oakland, without further agreement by the artist, for exhibition and /or publications (print or online). Artwork may not be credited.

  • Completed Entry Form (must include title and theme statement)
